The Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at USI was established in 2014, with the purpose to make a contribution towards the solution of an important problem in Switzerland: the dearth of physicians trained in Switzerland. The new Faculty will offer a Master degree in Medicine (3 years) starting in 2020, in close collaboration with ETH Zurich, University of Basel and University of Zurich on the academic side, and with the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale and private clinics in Ticino for the bedside teaching.
To date, the Faculty has affiliated the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) and is in the process of affiliating the Institute of Oncology Research (IOR). Both institutes are located in Bellinzona. The IRB, founded in 2000, is active in the field of immunology and cellular biology, with about 80 researchers from all over the world working in nine different groups. The IOR was founded in 2003 and is active in tumour biology, genomics, molecular oncology and experimental therapies, with about 50 researchers working in six different groups.
The Faculty of Biomedical Sciences will encompass close collaborations with other USI Faculties in the areas of Health Communication, Health Management and Economics, and Computational Science.
The Center of Advanced Studies on Entrepreneurship in Biomedicine (CASE BioMed) rounds out the medical and scientific education at the Faculty of Biomedicine at USI by offering advanced programs (BioBusiness and MedTech Business) to provide young life sciences companies with the skills needed to develop, finance and market biomedical innovation.
