The first Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in «Sleep, Consciousness and Related Disorders» will begin in autumn thanks to a cooperation between USI, the University of Bern, as well as Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale and Inselspital. The higher education course deals with a growing field of medicine.

Sleep is important for people and animals not only to save energy, but also to allow the brain and various organs to recover and repair. Sleep disorders can be a first sign of illness such as Parkinson’s, dementia and depression. It is therefore vital to map sleep among animals and humans to understand how it relates to mental health, brain functions and physical performance in healthy and sick conditions.

The CAS «Sleep, Consciousness and Related Disorders» is a one-year higher education programme aimed at Swiss and international academics operating in the health sector, who are interested in delving into this field of medicine.

The programme consists of 10 ECTS split up in four modules, half of which can be completed online, leaving attendees great flexibility, and it will begin on October 18.

A three-day seminar on scientific research will be held in Wengen. The CAS will end in July 2019 with the renowned Sleep Medical Summer School SMSS, which is already taking place for the fifth time in Lugano.

Registration deadline is August 31, 2018. The first 10 candidates will benefit from a 50% reduction of admission fees courtesy of the European Sleep Foundation.
