Institutes Faculty of Biomedical Sciences

According to USI organisational structure with regard to institutes, the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences supports at the at an organisational level the following institutes:

  • Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) - affiliated
    IRB, founded in 2000, is active in the field of immunology and cellular biology, with 120 researchers from all over the world working in 13 different groups.

  • Institute of Oncology Research (IOR) - affiliated
    IOR was established in 2003 and operates in the fields of tumour biology, genomics, molecular oncology and experimental therapies, with about 60 researchers working in six different groups.

  • Institute of Public Health (IPH)
    IPH performes reasearch, training and practice in broad activities and allows for a variety of projects and approaches. It collaborates with and includes members from other Faculties at USI.

Affiliation and association

A third party institute affiliated to USI is also subject to the University strategies and general regulations. The affiliated institutes maintain administrative autonomy. Affiliation is defined by the Law that regulates Università della Svizzera italiana, art. 12a, and by the Statute of Università della Svizzera italiana, art. 6a.

The association with USI of a third party institution allows a formal synergy between the University and the associate institution in areas of interest. The institution is not involved in the University strategic planning or general regulations. The association is defined by the Law that regulates the Università della Svizzera italiana, art. 12b.
