On 5 March 2018, in Bellinzona, the cornerstone of the new building "Nel Parco" was laid, which from 2021 will host three research institutes active in the field of biomedicine: the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB), the Institute for Oncology Research (IOR) – both affiliated with USI – and the laboratories of the Neurocentro della Svizzera Italiana (NSI).

Antonio Lanzavecchia (IRB Director), Gabriele Gendotti (President of the IRB Foundation), Giorgio Noseda (Honorary President of the IRB Foundation), Christian Vitta (Councilor of State of the Canton Ticino), Mario Branda (Major of Bellinzona) and Aurelio Galfetti (architect and designer).

The "Nel Parco" (In the park) complex was much sought after by the IRB Foundation, which has taken the responsibility of realising the project with the support of the City of Bellinzona, the Swiss Confederation, Università della Svizzera italiana, and other private entities, among which the Helmut Horten Foundation. The new building will be home to around 200 researchers from the three institutes, providing them with laboratories and cutting-edge equipment and facilities enabling leading fundamental research and teaching in the field of biomedicine.
