4 April 2022

Sustainable University Day 2022 is fast approaching. It will be held on Friday, 29 April 2022, in Mendrisio (USI and SUPSI campuses). In the run-up to the event, each week, we are presenting one of the four sessions in which the programme promoted by U Change is divided. Sustainable University Day (SUD) is a day in which students, professors, researchers and all those interested in the topic of sustainability will be able to discover various sustainability initiatives and projects and discuss together how universities can contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainability Goals.

Universities and the 2030 Agenda: what role do social challenges, dialogue with the territory and student commitment play? This will be the leitmotif of the ten workshops, divided into four sessions, that will lead the Sustainable University Day 2022. Here are the three workshops of the first session, scheduled in parallel from 10.15 to 11.00.

#SUD2022 - THE FIRST SESSION

Tyres meet theatre. A sustainable adventure between entrepreneurship and art
Prof. Demis Quadri, Susanna Lotz, Emmanuel Pouilly (Accademia Teatro Dimitri)

This conference workshop aims to present an innovative collaboration between a University of Applied Sciences specializing in Physical Theatre and a leading company in the tyre industry, to generate a positive impact on society.

Language: Italian.

Priority topics for sustainability research
Dr Christian Pohl (ETH Zurich and Chair of the U Change Steering Committee), Dr Gabriela Wülser (Sustainable Development Research Initiative, SCNAT), Peter Edwards (ETH Zurich and Chair of the Sustainable Development Research Initiative, SCNAT)

In a recent report, the Swiss Academies of Sciences outlined the country's most urgent research needs to achieve the UN SDGs. This workshop will critically discuss these priority issues with the audience. So join us and share your perspective in addressing the critical open questions of sustainability that need to be put on the scientific agenda.

The empty, unscrupulous greenwashing machine
Prof. Peter Seele (USI)

When deeds do not match words, greenwashing is used for sustainability. Unfortunately, Greenwashing is spreading to more and more fields besides the purely environmental ones. In this meeting, we present examples and definitions and discuss why it is worthwhile to demand greater credibility.

Language: English with simultaneous translation into French / Italian.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE UNIVERSITY DAY (SUD)?

In the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) context, global sustainable development issues have gained political importance. Consequently, the thematization of these issues during studies has become even more important. For this reason, the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences, through the U Change initiative, is promoting Sustainable University Day (SUD) - a day in which students, researchers, lecturers, university staff and all interested parties will be able to engage in various activities as part of an interactive and multifaceted programme, in collaboration with research and teaching partners, non-profit organizations and local associations.
