The Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of Università della Svizzera italiana USI and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bern will collaborate in the future to train students in human medicine. The agreement between the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at USI and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bern stipulates that the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bern will provide up to 15 study positions in its Bachelor of Human Medicine programme for students enrolled at USI.
USI Faculty of Biomedical Sciences was founded in 2014 to contribute to the solution of a major national problem: the shortage of trained physicians in Switzerland. To this end, the Faculty offers a Master of Medicine and collaborates with other Swiss faculties to grant graduate degrees. Based on existing agreements with the University of Basel and the University of Bern, USI now offers 30 bachelor's degree spots each year (in addition to the approximately 180 places currently available - considered over the three years of the Master's programme - in Human Medicine).
Under the cooperation agreement between USI and the University of Bern, USI students will now be able to complete the Bachelor's degree in Human Medicine in Bern starting in the fall semester of 2023. After successfully completing the Bachelor's degree in Bern, the students will transfer to USI in Ticino for the Master's degree.
"I am thrilled that the long-standing good academic collaboration in research between the medical schools in Bern and Ticino can now actualise in the teaching field as well," states Prof. Dr. med. C. L. A. Bassetti, Dean of the Medical Faculty of Bern.
"The agreement between the University of Bern and USI marks a critical moment for the Master of Medicine at USI and confirms the excellent spirit of cooperation between the two universities," noted Prof. Dr. med. G. Pedrazzini, Dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of USI.
