Alessandro Ceschi appointed new Head of the Medical Training and Research Area of the EOC

Prof. Dr. med. Alessandro Ceschi has been appointed new Head of the Medical Training and Research Area (AFRi) of the EOC (Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale) by the Board of Directors. Professor Ceschi, currently Chief and Medical and Scientific Director of the Institute of Pharmacological Sciences of Southern Switzerland, Deputy Head of the AFRi Area and Professor of Pharmacology and Clinical Toxicology at the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of the Università della Svizzera Italiana, will be part of the EOC's Executive Board, taking up his new post on 1 September 2023

Prof. Dr. med. Alessandro Ceschi, an internationally renowned pharmacologist and clinical toxicologist, who holds various positions at national and international level, will assume responsibility for the Medical Training and Research Area (AFRi) of the EOC, while continuing his role as Chief and Medical and Scientific Director of the Institute of Pharmacological Sciences of Southern Switzerland (ISFSI). In his new role, he will be responsible within the EOC Executive Board for defining the strategy and guiding the policies and challenges facing the EOC in the field of medical education and research, in line with the collaboration signed with the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) and in particular the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences. A priority project will be to grow EOC towards the University Hospital.

From 1 September 2023, Prof. Dr. med. Ceschi will succeed Prof. Dr. med. Michele Ghielmini, who held the position for a number of years and, before that, was Chief Medical and Scientific Director of the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland for several years. Specialist in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, Specialist in General Internal Medicine, FMH member. Professor of Pharmacology and Clinical Toxicology at the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), Switzerland, lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Zurich, and lecturer at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Basel.

Prof. Dr. med. M.Sc. Alessandro Ceschi was born in Lugano and studied medicine at the University of Zurich, where he graduated in 2004 and then obtained his doctorate and later his university teaching licence. He subsequently obtained a postgraduate master of science degree from the University of Bordeaux in collaboration with other European universities. He returned to Ticino after having held various roles of increasing responsibility in Zurich, including as the chief scientific officer at the Tox-Zentrum and where he still holds the position of consulting physician at the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Toxicology at the University Hospital of Zurich. Since 2017, he has held the position of head physician and medical and scientific director of the Institute of Pharmacological Sciences of Southern Switzerland (ISFSI) and president of the EOC Therapeutic Commission. Since 2020, he has also been Director of the Clinical Trial Unit of the EOC and Deputy Head of the Medical Training and Research Area. He was coordinator of the EOC-Faculty of Biomedical Sciences USI Accompanying Group and a member of the EOC Scientific Research Advisory Board.

Prof. Ceschi has an important clinical research activity with numerous high-level international publications and is a member of scientific committees at national and international level. He has been a member of commissions and expert committees for national authorities, as well as an expert for the World Health Organisation within the global patient safety programme related to drug therapies. In 2018, he was awarded the first national Innovation Qualité prize, patient safety category, by the Swiss Academy for Quality in Medicine and the Swiss Patient Safety Foundation.

The scientific profile and academic experience of Prof. Dr. med. M.Sc. Ceschi are well matched with an innate curiosity for research and innovation, a predisposition for collaboration, a focus on always giving priority to patient safety, and a passion for nurturing young people who are beginning to study medicine. Close ties with the canton and a firm identification with the EOC values complete the profile of the new AFRi Area Head.
