At its latest plenary session, the Council of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences appointed Giovanni Pedrazzini as the new Dean for the two-year period 2021-2023. He will be joined by Greta Guarda (Vice Dean for research) and Luca Gabutti (Vice Dean for training). The new Deanery of the Faculty will take office on 1 January 2021, succeeding current Dean and Founder Mario Bianchetti.

Giovanni Pedrazzini is co-Head of cardiology at Cardiocentro Ticino and Full professor at the USI Faculty of Biomedical Sciences. He completed his medical studies at the University of Lausanne and then specialised in Internal Medicine and Cardiology in Bern and Zurich. He has been active at Cardiocentro Ticino since its opening in 1999, first as Head of the interventional cardiology service, then as Deputy head and finally as co-Head of cardiology. Since 2012, he holds a venia legendi at the University of Zurich. Author of numerous scientific publications, Giovanni Pedrazzini is a member - among others - of the Swiss Society of Cardiology, of which he is President, the European Society of Cardiology, the Swiss Society of General Internal Medicine and the Medical Doctors Association of the Canton Ticino.

In 2007, she went to the University of Lausanne, first as a post-doctoral researcher and then as a senior lecturer in 2010. In 2012, she founded her research group thanks to a professorship from the Swiss National Research Foundation and an ERC Starting Grant, obtained in 2013. In March 2018, Greta Guarda returned to the IRB as Group leader and, in 2019, she was appointed Associate professor at USI.

Luca Gabutti, internal medicine physician and nephrologist, has been Head of internal medicine at the Regional Hospital of Bellinzona since 2016, after having been Head of nephrology and then Head of the Department of internal medicine at the Regional Hospital of Locarno from 2000 to 2015. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Lausanne in 1990. He then pursued and obtained his PhD in 1996 at the University of Bern. He was Attending physician and Head physician in various health institutions and obtained the titles of FMH specialist in internal medicine (1996) and nephrology (1998). In 2006, he was nominated Senior lecturer at the University of Lausanne where, in 2012, he was appointed Professor. He has conducted and published numerous clinical studies, particularly in the field of hemodialysis. He is Full professor at the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of USI.
